- The company incorporates new technology in its OTT platform to minimize the broadcasting time of sporting events
- Avatel is the first operator in Spain to implement this technology in CLICtv, its own TV platform
November 14, 2022 – Avatel, the fifth national teleoperator and leader in rural areas, marks a milestone in its commitment to innovation and television content. Thus, it will be the first operator in Spain to incorporate a new technology that allows to reduce to the maximum the latency of live and high-definition broadcasts of its OTT, CLICtv.
The purple company thus provides a solution to one of the main challenges for Internet broadcasting: making the immediacy of the broadcast practically the same as that of cable or satellite TV. In a pioneering way in the Spanish market, Avatel has managed to significantly reduce broadcasting times from 50 to 10 seconds from any device (TV, smartphone, Tablet, etc).
In this way, the experience is improved by eliminating the “spoiler effect”, especially uncomfortable in the broadcasting of sporting events such as soccer. This advantage will be especially relevant for the Qatar 2022 World Cup, which will start in November.
The channels to which this solution will be implemented initially will be those of LaLiga TV Bar for the Horeca sector (hotels, restaurants and catering): LaLiga TV Bar, LaLiga TV Bar Multi 2 to 10, Movistar Liga de Campeones and Movistar Liga de Campeones Box Office 2 to 5, as well as DAZN F1, DAZN BAR 1, DAZN BAR 2.
The exponential decrease in latency is made possible by technology from Ateme, a leader in video compression, delivery and streaming solutions with innovation at its core. Ateme supplied solutions for the complete video-delivery chain – from encoding to packaging to CDN – ensuring that all components work together to deliver low latency.
“There have been many demonstrations of low-latency transmission, but few real-world implementations. So our work with Avatel is quite a game changer. We are excited to be able to pioneer this technology and to offer a superior viewing experience thanks to our control of the end-to-end video-delivery stack,” says Damien Lucas, Chief Product Officer at Ateme.
Gerard Bosch, Avatel’s Technical General Manager, highlights how “the implementation of this solution allows us to ensure the lowest possible latencies, while maintaining high viewing quality. This is a very important requirement for all viewers of sports content, or other thematic content, where live broadcasting is rewarded without accepting compromises. Our end users will be able to enjoy the best sporting events and competitions as if they were physically on the field or on the set”.
