While CPU is a great solution for distribution applications, due to latency challenges and high power per channel, it’s not suitable for contribution applications because of long boot time. ASIC can support low latency, low power and fast boot time, but is often costly and not easily upgradeable during the product lifetime (HEVC or UHD upgrade for instance).
The Kyrion encoder and decoder are the only state of the art professional solutions based on a field-programmable gate array (FPGA), without ASIC nor CPU support. Its 50% free compute cycles enable ATEME to provide continuous VQ enhancements and support for UHD and HEVC through a simple software upgrade.
